چکیده

TREATMENT OF LEAD TOXICITY with chelation was first reported with EDTA in the early 1950s. Apparent success in reducing metastatic calcium deposits led Clarke et al in 1956 to treat angina patients with EDTA, and others to use chelation for various forms of atherosclerotic disease. Chelation therapy evolved to constitute infusions of vitamins and disodium EDTA, a drug that binds divalent and some trivalent cations, including calcium, magnesium, lead, cadmium, zinc, iron, aluminum, and copper, facilitating their urinary excretion. Over the next decades, based on favorable anecdotal and case report experience, chelation practitioners increased their use of EDTA for coronary and peripheral artery disease. The 2007 National Health Statistics Report compared chelation use since 2002 and noted

Effect of disodium EDTA chelation regimen on cardiovascular events in patients with previous myocardial infarction: the TACT randomized trial.

IMPORTANCE Chelation therapy with disodium EDTA has been used for more than 50 years to treat atherosclerosis without proof of efficacy. OBJECTIVE To determine if an EDTA-based chelation regimen reduces cardiovascular events. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Double-blind, placebo-controlled, 2 × 2 factorial randomized trial enrolling 1708 patients aged 50 years or older who had experienced...

Pediatric fatality secondary to EDTA chelation.

BACKGROUND Chelation therapy has emerged as a popular treatment modality to remove heavy metals that are thought to cause autism. We report a fatality that occurred as a consequence of chelation therapy for autism when the incorrect form of EDTA was administered. CASE REPORT A five-year-old autistic male was being chelated in a physician's office. While receiving his third treatment he went i...

Chelation Therapy: Unproven Claims and Unsound Theories

Chelation therapy, as discussed in this article, is a series of intravenous infusions containing disodium EDTA and various other substances. It is sometimes done by swallowing EDTA or other agents in pill form. Proponents claim that EDTA chelation therapy is effective against atherosclerosis and many other serious health problems. Its use is widespread because patients have been led to believe ...

EDTA chelation therapy in the treatment of toxic metals

BACKGROUND: Metal induced toxicity with wide range of physiological, biochemical and behavioral dysfunctions was reported in many studies. The chelation has been used for treatment to toxic metals’ exposure for many years. In our current clinical study, we compared different chelation protocols and two forms of EDTA (sodium calcium edetate and sodium edetate) in treatments of toxic metal exposu...

Effect of Chelation with Calcium Disodium EDTA on Haemato-biochemical and Trace Mineral Profile in Blood from Lead Exposed Calves

An experiment was performed using 20 calves of about one-month old to investigate the effect of chelation therapy with calcium disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (CaNa2EDTA) alone or along with antioxidant α-tocopherol in lead loaded calves on blood trace minerals, erythrocytic sulfahydryl groups and some haematobiochemical parameters. Fifteen calves were given lead orally at a daily dose of ...
